Source Tagging - A Manufacturer's Perspective ...and Beyond

Dr John Bayne
Bayne Richards Consultancy

In the UK, source tagging has not grown as many believed it would. In fact, the source tagging debate is characterised, with some exceptions, by mistrust and a lack of openness among the parties involved. Having previously worked on source tagging for United Distillers and Vintners and having chaired a Scotch Whisky Association Committee on Source Tagging, John Bayne of Bayne Richards Consultancy brings some of the issues into the open by describing source tagging from a manufacturer's viewpoint, looking at the reasons for these views, and identifying possible routes for moving the debate forward.

Strategies to Combat Counterfeiting and Parallel Trade - or You don't always get what you pay for!

By Joe Hancock

What costs £400 billion a year and is never worth what you pay for it? The answer is the recently estimated value of the global market for counterfeit goods and parallel trade. Phoneys, fakes and forgeries now account for nearly seven per cent of world trade, costing over 100,000 legitimate jobs a year - and in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, wines and spirits they have left a trail of death. In markets such as fuels and lubricants, the avoidance of tax and adulteration are costing the economies of even small states tens to hundreds of millions of pounds a year in lost revenues as well as severely damaging consumer confidence in very visible high street brands.
